Hülya Avşar --
Can't help making news... You know it's spring in Turkey when Hülya Avşar starts giving frikik. So on March 27th, when we opened Gözcü Gazetesi to page 2 and caught a glimpse of Hülya's silk undies beneath a micro-mini tennis skirt, we knew it was safe to begin peeling off our winter-weather gear. Another Turkish spring had sprung. But we weren't fully prepared for what happened next... For, not only did Göcü Gazetesi cover the story of Hulya's spring season 'opener', but, in the course of the next several days, so did (at least) three other mainstream Turkish newspapers -- Posta, Sabah, and Takvim. And they each used differently-angled photos to present their own particular slant on the main eye-catching theme, as follows: Gözcü Gazetesi's Slant The caption immediately under the frikik photo in the mini-article above right says: Hülya's got her eye on politics The headline says: "If I were the Government's Minister for Sports, I'd modernize to make up for lost time (Turkish idiom: çag atlamak)." The article says:
Hülya played a demonstration match at the Tennis Tournament sponsored in her name by the T.E.D. American Hospital -- and her seasonal cellulite problem drew attention. But, beyond that she seemed to imply an interest in the Government's Sports Ministerial position (Spordan Sorumlu Devlet Bakanı -- the job currently held by Mehmet Ali Şahin).
Hülya led off a press conference saying, "Except for football, sport in Turkey is given very short shrift. If I weren't an entertainer, I'd want to be either the National Education Minister or the Sports Minister -- and I'd make big changes. But I'll continue giving my support to these endeavors, as an entertainer." And she concluded, "I've decided to sponsor the building of tennis courts in the [troubled] Southeast of Turkey."
