The group of learned 'doctors' administrating Muslim canon law, tradition, theology in the Ottoman State. From the mid-16th Century onward, the head of the ulema was the Şeyhülislam. The first instance of this was during the reign of Süleyman I, when the sultan's old friend Ebussuud gained control of the ulema.

Second son of the founder of the Aydın Dynasty, established (originally) near Izmir (Smyrna).
|
Under Umur Bey, the Aydın Dynasty became a sea power. By means of his fleet, Umur was able to successfully raid Byzantine Thrace (in the 1330's). At times, his forces were enlisted as mercenaries by Pretenders to the Byzantine throne. Umur Bey was a contemporary of Osman I, The founder of the Ottoman Empire.
