'Mine' means 'something lustrous and graceful' and 'Mutlu' means 'happy and lucky'. Unfortunately, Ms. Mutlu's real-life story was filled with disappointment and sorrow -- the story of an established legitimate actress who became associated with the Turkish 'erotik' film industry, and got trampled in the process. As social commentator Cihan Demirci says, "Hers was a uniquely Turkish-style of tragedy (özgü alaturka bir trajedi) -- not found anywhere else in the world." Born in 1948, Mine Mutlu began acting in conventional Turkish films just before her 20th birthday in 1967, which was several years before the start of the 'Erotik' Film Era in Turkey. In total she appeared in 69 movies -- 54 of them were legitimate, non-'erotik'. Mine Mutlu in Hancı (1969) -- one of many conventional films before she turned to 'erotik'a Click for enlargement! Furthermore, of the 15 'erotik' films in which she did appear, most were soft-core 'sex-farce' films like Elma Şekeri (Candied Apple), the story of a hen-pecked husband (Ali Poyrazoğlu) who finally finds true-love (Mine Mutlu) while escaping the clutches of his overbearing wife (Sevda Karaca) and his flighty sexpot lover (Senar Seven)... In those sex-farce films, Mine Hanım played opposite comedic male actors like Ali Poyrazoğlu, Aydemir Akbaş, Sermet Serdengeçti, and Orçun Sonat who made the audiences laugh -- but she sometimes seemed distant, somewhat aloof, not identifying with the other players (nor with her audience)... a melancholy figure. Her wistful appearance seemed to say that she wasn't actually a participant in these films, wasn't actually doing these things, wasn't like the other female actors... Mine Mutlu's first conventional film in 1967 was Bana Kurşun Işlemez (Bullets can't hurt me). And although she only acted in a minor role, the film is noteworthy because it was directed by Yılmaz Güney, one of Turkey's most controversial film personalities. Yılmaz Güney (a Turk of Kurdish origion, real name Pütün, born in Adana 1937) His prolific career spanned the 30 years between 1953 and 1983. But after 1972, Güney spent much of his remaining life in prison -- first for 'subversive activities', then later, for murder! While behind bars, Güney wrote screenplays -- which friends on the outside nurtured through to film production. During his career he acted in 114 films, directed 26, produced 15, and wrote screenplays for 64 more -- while collecting national and international awards in each of those categories. He died in exile in Paris of stomach cancer in 1984, after escaping prison in 1981. Mine Mutlu and Arzu Okay provided the heat in Oksal Pekmezoğlu's 1974 sex-farce Olmaz Böyle Şey Click for enlargement! Mine Mutlu's 2nd conventional film (also in 1967) was Pranga Mahkumu (Shackled Court) -- and after 'Pranga' she acted in more than 40 other conventional movies before agreeing to take on her first full-fledged 'erotik' film role, in the sex-farce Beş Tavuk Bir Horoz (Five Chickens, One Rooster) in 1974.
