Wrangle over adultery -- EU members are up in arms about the attempt (by AKP religious-right ruling-party members of the Turkish Parliament) to criminalize adultery in the 'modernized' Turkish Criminal Code (TCK)... Adultery has long been viewed as a grounds-for-divorce in Turkey, though not a criminal act. But, when the EU called upon the Turkish parliament to modernize her criminal code (as a pre-condition for EU talks-that-might-lead-to-membership), religious-right AKP parliamentarians saw it as an opportunity to try to sneak through a few holier-than-thou laws. One, which would have criminalized adultery, brought a storm of protest from European critics. Loudest of all those crying FOUL! were EU women's-rights groups who were furious at the prospect of their Turkish sisters-to-be landing in jail -- just because of an 'innocent' bit-on-the-side. And, finally, after far too much huffy male-dominated AKP party-debate in public (and a bit of arm-twisting by Turkish PM Erdoğan in private), the attempt to criminalize adultery in Turkey was 'shuffled off to Buffalo'.
